New PTA Officers for 2011-2012 and PTA Year in Review

posted May 20, 2011, 4:24 AM by Chris Miller

At our PTA meeting last week, the following officers were elected for the upcoming school year:

President: Lisa Jacobs

Vice-President-GW1: Kay Arndorfer

Vice-President-GW2: Holly Sapp

Secretary:  Cathy Olsen

Treasurer:  Taylor Mobley

This is a very strong slate of officers who bring years of PTA experience to their positions. Over the next several weeks, the new executive committee will be focusing on plans for next year, while the current treasurer, Mary Anne Salmon, and I will continue to manage the day-to-day PTA matters until the end of this school year.  (Reminder: If you are a committee chair and have any receipts for reimbursement, please forward those to Mary Anne or me as soon as possible so that Mary Anne can prepare the financial records for the annual audit.)

It has been a privilege to serve as PTA president for the past year. The many parents who serve in various volunteer capacities are talented and committed, and I have enjoyed working with them all.  Lisa Jacobs, who served this past year as VP for GW1, was enormously helpful to me, and I can never thank her enough for all of her contributions this year.

Below are some of the PTA’s major accomplishments this year, along with my thanks to the individuals who were instrumental in those efforts:

·        Funded $5,900 in field trips (Thank you, Lisa Jacobs) and $5,000 in education grants to teachers (Thank you, John and Mary Embrey).

·        Revamped the middle-school intramural program, which this spring had a total of almost 400 participants at the GW and Hammond campuses (Thank you, Vaughn Jordan, and the intramural committee).

·        Published an after-school activities directory in English and Spanish.

·        Redesigned our in-school tutoring program to improve its effectiveness for students and tutors (Thank you, Donna Gold, and your team of tutors).

·        Improved outreach to faculty, hosted faculty events designed to solicit their input, and collected school supplies for teachers (Thank you, Dorene Pickup).

·        Hosted a standing-room-only rising 6th-grade parent luncheon (Thank you, Jennifer Roda).

·        Boosted attendance at PTA meetings, which averaged around 50 people.

·        Surpassed our fundraising target (Thank you, Lisa Jacobs and all of the GW Donors, Donna Gerade, Debra Raggio, Eileen O’Brien).

·        Improved communication with parents, including nearly 100 Town Crier messages (Thank you, Barbara Glomb).

·        Launched a website redesign which is currently in progress (Thank you awesome webmasters, Chris Miller and Thad Ring).

·        Hosted a Community of Concern dinner attended by 150 students and parents (Thank you, Beth Lovain).

·        Established a volunteer database for more efficient recruitment of volunteers (Thank you, Terry Davis).

My twin daughters will be 8th-graders next year, and I look forward to being involved in the PTA as a member rather than an officer….something that I would highly recommend to those of you who have a few hours to spare.  It’s very rewarding, and a perfect way to become more familiar with the school and all of the great things going on inside it.

Thank you again for all of your support throughout the year.
