A Message from the President:
Our January PTA meeting will be this Wednesday, January 10th, 7pm, in person in the GW auditorium and on Facebook Live. Dr. Pierette Finney, Chief Academic Officer, ACPS, and Ms. Carmen Sanders, Executive Director of Instructional Support, ACPS, will join us to discuss the High School Project’s Program of Studies. This is especially important for our 8th grade families as their students look to choose their courses for next year. Interpretation will be provided in Amharic and Spanish.
The Agenda is included. The Minutes from our last meeting (November 2023,) are also included for your review. Snacks will be provided.
The GW Science Fair is also scheduled for Wednesday evening. If you are interested in participating as a judge, please contact Mr. Matthews. Parents and caregivers are invited to view the projects from 5-5:30pm.

School Board District A Special Election - GWMS NO SCHOOL IN PERSON 1/9
The Alexandria PTA Council (PTAC) hosted an online School Board Candidate Forum on January 3rd in preparation for the January 9th special election to fill the open seat in District A. You can watch the replay of the forum on PTAC's Facebook page.
Election Day in the District A School Board Special Election is Tuesday, January 9th.
The GWMS building will be used as a voting site. Students will attend school virtually, both synchronous through zoom and asynchronous.

Rising 9th Grade Information
Families are invited to attend the Alexandria City High School (ACHS) Academic Orientation & Curriculum Night on this Tuesday, January 9th, 5:30-7:30 pm. Students and families will get a glimpse of ACHS’ various programs. An evening program will include:
Breakout sessions for rising ninth through rising twelfth grade students
Graduation requirements, course offerings, sequencing, and expectations
Breakout Sessions: Academies and Pathways, Governor’s Health Sciences, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), and MORE
The Program of Studies will be available in January, and will provide a comprehensive overview of the many educational opportunities available to students at ACHS. Families can review the 2023-24 Program of Studies for reference.
Rising GW 9th graders will attend an information session (for students only,) during the school day on Thursday, January 11th, (9-11am,) in the GW Auditorium.
Rising 6th Grade Information
On Friday, January 12th GW will host the first open house for rising 6th grade parents/caregivers. For those families with rising 6th graders, please plan to attend to learn more about GW and to take a tour led by student ambassadors. Open houses are for parents/caregivers only. Elementary school students will attend “A GW Glimpse” February 6th-8th. Each elementary school will be provided more information.
Wednesday, January 17th, is the Electives Fair and Curriculum Night. Parents and students (of riding 6th-8th) are strongly encouraged to attend to learn more about GW elective offerings and course expectations.Academic Advisement Letter
Support Alexandria Crew! Erg Sprints, February 3rd
Did your son or daughter enjoy the learn to row program in PE or in one of the summer or after school programs? Are you interested in supporting one of the oldest public schools rowing programs in the country? Are you just curious what one of the largest indoor rowing competitions in the world is like?
Erg Sprints is February 3rd and the primary fundraiser to support Alexandria Crew Boosters programs, including Learn to Row, Spring, Summer, and Fall Crew, Old Dominion Boat Club Select Rowing, and Winter Conditioning. And this year, we are the host site of the 2024 USRowing Indoor National Championships!
